Destruction of the Marian column in the Old Town Square (1918)

The Marian column of Prague is a religious monument located in the city’s Old Town Square. The column was demolished on November 3, 1918 by a group of Žižkov’s laborers, who saw it as a symbol of the overthrown Habsburg monarchy. Franta Sauer, a Prague writer and rebel, is cited as the main perpetrator of the destruction.
